Caring for Your Child's Smile

Would you like to help your child avoid cavities? The dentists at Hunting Hills Family Dentistry in Roanoke, VA, share a few tips that will pediatric dentistryhelp your son or daughter's smile remain bright and healthy.

Start an oral hygiene routine early

Even babies and toddlers can develop tooth decay. Fortunately, you can reduce your child's risk of cavities by brushing his or her teeth every morning and night. Begin brushing as soon as your child's first tooth appears. A rice-sized spot of toothpaste is all you'll need if your child only has a few teeth.

As your son or daughter grows, encourage him or her to take over brushing. Keep in mind that most kids don't have the manual dexterity to do a good job until they're at least seven or older. Even if your child can handle a toothbrush, supervise brushing to make sure he or she is thoroughly cleaning every single tooth.

Flossing should begin when at least two adjacent teeth touch each other. When flossing starts early, it will become a normal part of your child's daily routine.

Take advantage of fluoride

Fluoride helps remineralize and strengthen weak areas of tooth enamel that are susceptible to tooth decay. Toothpastes that contain fluoride play an important role in reducing your child's cavity risk. It's easy to tell if a toothpaste contains this important mineral. If the package features the American Dental Association (ADA) seal, fluoride is a key ingredient. For additional protection, fluoride can be applied directly to your child's teeth during his or her next checkup.

Offer healthy snacks

Healthy snacks not only provide the vitamins and nutrients your child needs but also protect his or her teeth. Fruits and vegetables and foods that contain calcium, such as yogurt, are much better for your child's body and teeth than sugary treats.

Schedule regular dental examinations

Both children and adults should visit our Roanoke office every six months. Regular visits give us the opportunity to spot tooth decay and any problems that may affect the normal development of your child's teeth and jaw. Visits also include cleanings to remove cavity-causing plaque and tartar, a hard deposit that can cause gum disease.
